ASC suspects that CI611 had sudden cabin pressure loss

CNA , TAIPEI

Investigators suspect that an abrupt loss of cabin pressure may have been the cause of the disintegration of a China Airlines aircraft at high altitude over the Taiwan Strait May 25, the Aviation Safety Council (ASC), which is in charge of the investigation of the cause of the crash, said yesterday.

Kay Yong (戎凱), ASC managing director, said abnormal cabin pressure is now the focus of investigators, although related physical evidence has yet to be retrieved.

The Boeing 747-200 aircraft crashed off Makung, Penghu, 30 minutes after departing from CKS International Airport for Hong Kong, killing all 225 aboard.

The cause of the crash remains a mystery. Investigators of the ASC have so far ruled out weather and human error in the crash, and the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder salvaged from the sea have not rendered any significant clues.
