Report says anti-tank missile deal made

AFP , TAIPEI

Taiwan will buy more than 360 US-made medium-range anti-tank missiles to boost its anti-landing capacity, the authoritative Jane's Defence Weekly said in its latest issue.

The deal for the Raytheon-Lockheed Martin Javelin anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) system was struck following the conclusion last month of a letter of agreement with the US army, the magazine said, touting it as the "first major sale of Javelin in the Pacific region."

Jane's said the Javelin contract, valued at some US$39 million, covers more than 360 missiles and 60 command launch units together with training devices, logistics support, associated equipment and training.

Taiwan's current inventory of anti-tank weapons includes the tube-launched optically tracked wire-guided missile launcher, 106mm M40A1 recoilless rifle and 90mm M67 recoilless rifle.

Unlike these, the Javelin is a "fire-and-forget" system. With a maximum range of 2,500m, the Javelin is also equipped with an infrared imaging system.
