Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Ling-san (林陵三) said yesterday that plans to build an international airport in Taichung are still under assessment.
Lin was responding to media reports that said the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) felt construction of the Taichung International Airport should be carried out in two stages.
Under the CAA plan, the present Taichung Airport would first be relocated to Chinchuankang Air Base where a separate runway would be built for civilian aircraft. In the second stage, the facility would be made into an international airport.
Lin said the media based their reports on the CAA's feasibility study, adding that related matters are still being assessed by the ministry and that nothing has been finalized.
Meanwhile, PFP legislators criticized the administration's plan to construct an international airport in central Taiwan as an example of making promises with the aim of winning votes.
