A group of Taiwanese students beat professional chefs to win the group category in a recent culinary contest.
Six students from Kaohsiung Hospitality College (KHC), accompanied by two of their lecturers, competed in four categories: hot dishes, fruit and vegetable sculpture, cold platter arrangement and deserts in the competition, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 27 to June 30.
Together, they brought home one gold and one silver medal from the group competition and one special gold, five gold and three silver medals in individual competitions, beating 75 participant teams from 33 countries.
The KHC group set the record in the World Contest of Chinese Cooking by winning the title for the group competition by students. Their performances were also the best by all similar teams from Taiwan in the contest over the past several years.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said.
