The nation's first permanent Holocaust memorial hall was opened in a Christian church in the southern county of Tainan yesterday in memory of the 6 million innocent people killed by the Nazis during World War II.
The new memorial hall in the Cheluchien Christian Church in Jenteh village was established with the assistance of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, which represents Israeli interests in Taiwan in the absence of formal diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Israeli Representative to Taiwan Menashe Zipori and Klaus Rupprecht, director-general of Germany's representative office in Taipei -- the German Institute -- as well as Tainan County's deputy magistrate jointly presided over an inaugural ceremony for the memorial hall.
Addressing the ceremony, Zipori said the memorial hall will not only honor the 6 million Jewish people killed by the Nazis but will also remind the people of Taiwan that evil personifies itself in the cloak of dishonesty and cruelty.
Zipori said the memorial hall is expected to play an educational role in helping people better understand the truth of the Holocaust and inspire them to work for world peace and prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
