In addition to the submarines, the current discussions will deal with weapons such as four Kidd-class destroyers, self-propelled howitzers, military data links and "systems Taiwan is considering for its missile defense," one US official said.
But the talks will also deal with "other defense items and services that Taiwan already owns or may obtain in the future," the official said.
Taiwanese officials in Washington refused to comment on the talks.
