Taiwan's new representative to the UK received a warm welcome at a reception hosted in his honor by the British-Taiwan Parliamentary Group Tuesday evening.
Among some 200 guests, there were more than 40 British parliamentarians from both the House of Lords and the House of Commons representing all the major political parties, on hand to greet Tien Hung-mao (田弘茂), who arrived in London weeks ago to assume his new post after serving as minister of foreign affairs under President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
In his opening remarks at the reception, Tom Cox, a co-chairman of the British-Taiwan Parliamentary Group, noted that Tien not only has served in important government posts and played a role in Taiwan's constitutional reform, but also has a distinguished academic career, having authored a wide range of publications.
"We in the British Parliamentary Group see your appointment here in London as evidence of the strength and importance of the relationship which exists between our two countries," Cox said.
Invited to address the party, Tien thanked the British parliamentary group for its support and friendship over the years, as well as the group's recent support for Taiwan's efforts to join the WHO.
