"I don't understand why people don't ask the men instead why they wanted to marry us [foreign women]," Wu added.
Some people believe that most marriages between Taiwanese men and foreign women involve men who have had difficulty finding Taiwanese wives.
More often than not, the groom [who marries a foreign woman] is about 40 years old and a high school graduate, living in the countryside. Many of the men are drivers, farmers and laborers.
Wu's husband, Wong Chung-te (翁崇德), who married Wu when he was 37, admitted that he had difficulties finding a local woman to marry because he works nights.
"Many of my colleagues married foreign or Chinese brides. But they treat their wives as commodities. This terrible attitude has resulted in a high divorce rate in my factory," Wong said.
Wong works at the Nan Ya Plastics Corporation.
"It's time for us to think about our understanding of developing countries. Taiwan actually relies on these countries a lot," Hsia said.
"I hope all Taiwanese will stop doing what my husband did to me. We should be treated fairly, if they want a good family life," Esther said.
