The Ministry of the Interior (MOI) yesterday created a special committee to help the families of crash victims deal with the accident.

The Cabinet-level committee will help the central and local governments coordinate the rescue effort, the granting of relief pensions and the holding of memorial services.

The committee was set up under orders from Premier Yu Shyi-kun.

Memorial services

Following the group's first meeting yesterday afternoon, the ministry completed a schedule for seven memorial services to be held in Taipei, Penghu and Taichung that will accommodate the needs of Buddhists, Taoists and Christians.

At yesterday's meeting, Minister of the Interior Yu Cheng-hsien (余政憲) asked local governments to distribute a relief pension to the victims' families of NT$100,000 each.

The new committee is made up of representatives from China Airlines, the National Police Administration, the National Fire Administration and the ministry's Population Administration, Civil Affairs and Social Affairs departments.

The committee will hold a meeting every morning until it has worked out problems related to the crash, according to the MOI.

Recommendations

Based on the meeting's recommendations, the Civil Affairs Department would help organize memorial services for the victims' families around Taiwan, while the Criminal Investigation Bureau under the National Police Admin-istration is helping the victims' families to identify the bodies through fingerprints or DNA.

Also, the Population Administration Department would help these families quickly process the victims' death certificates in the coming days.

Also at yesterday's meeting, Yu Cheng-hsien asked that government officials sympathize with the pain of the victims' families when offering their assistance.
