The Mainland Affairs Council has asked the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) to help relatives of passengers from Hong Kong, Macau and China -- who were on flight CI-611, which crashed yesterday -- to come to Taiwan.

The council's Hong Kong Affairs Bureau will help family members in Hong Kong to come to Taiwan, the MAC's Director of Information and Liaison Chen Chung-hong (陳崇弘) said yesterday.

Among the 206 passengers on board, 14 were believed to have come from Hong Kong, Macau and China. But, as of press time last night, China Airlines could only say that nine of the 14 were from China.

The council's Hong Kong Affairs Bureau Director Chang Liang-jen (張良任) told the Taipei Times yesterday that after being informed of the accident, his bureau immediately set up an emergency center in Hong Kong International Airport to help issue visas to relatives wanting to come to Taiwan.

Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department Acting Director Lo Shung-man (羅崇文) told a news conference yesterday evening at Hong Kong International Airport: "The Hong Kong side will provide any necessary help to Taiwan."

"However, the department has not received any request for assistance from Taiwan yet."

Wang Daohan (汪道涵), chairman of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, expressed his regret and sorrow to the SEF, saying, "The Chinese side will provide help to Taiwan."

Wong Yu-shing (黃耀旋), a Hong Kong broadcast reporter, told the Taipei Times that more than 10 relatives of passengers and several Hong Kong-based reporters were waiting at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday afternoon to fly to Taiwan.

As of press time last night, only one family member of a Chinese passenger had called the MAC's Hong Kong Affairs Bureau for assistance in getting a visa, according to an official of the bureau.

CAL's Hong Kong hotline is 852-2261-1815.

The Hong Kong Immigration Office has set up its own hotline: 852-2829-3010.

The MAC's Hong Kong Affairs Bureau has set up a hotline on 852-9091-6005, 852-2523-4429 and 852-2522-9580.
