Obese take up Taipei's challenge to shed 100 tonnes

More than a quarter of adults over the age of 20 in Taipei are overweight or obese, according to the results of a survey by the Taipei City Government's Bureau of Health.

The survey results yesterday were released to coincide with an activity inviting Taipei residents to collectively lose 100 tonnes of weight in order to make Taipei a healthier and more energetic city.

The Bureau of Health, which is sponsoring the activity, said that as of Friday, 15,000 people had joined the activity and that a total of two tons of weight had already been shed by participants.

Bureau officials are calling for more people to come forward, saying that they can obtain related information at the Web address

The survey of Taipei residents between the ages of 13 and 64 on weight control behavior and recognition found that nearly 30 percent of the respondents believe they are overweight, 23 percent have at some point tried losing weight, while nearly 10 percent are currently trying to shed kilos.
