Pay attention to your visa, officer advises foreigners

"From time to time, we receive calls from distraught parents of local Taiwanese girls asking us for help, saying that they believed their daughters had been fooled by foreign boyfriends who just wanted [marriage] to gain residency in Taiwan," Tsao said.

By the numbers

According to the information given by the department, as of March this year, there were 55,997 foreign residents from 116 countries living in Taipei. Indonesians were the most numerous (20,169 people), followed by Filipinos (7,857), Japanese (6,123), Americans (4,852) and Thais (3,602).

"Of this total foreign population in town, 30,694 are foreign laborers and the rest are diplomats, businessmen, professionals and students," Tsao said.
