Kao Chun-chun (高淳淳), a defendant in the Chu Mei-feng (璩美鳳) sex-VCD scandal trial, was taken to the emergency room yesterday morning after taking too many painkillers.

According to the Taipei Municipal Yang-ming Hospital (陽明醫院) where Kao was hospitalized, her mother Kuo Yu-ling (郭玉鈴), who is also a defendant in the case, brought Kao to the emergency room for help around 2am yesterday morning.

Kao was weak but conscious when she arrived at the hospital. She was released by the hospital at 7am after treatment and left with her mother.

The hospital said that Kao simply took too much headache medicine.

Kuo and Kao live in Taipei City's Shihlin District. However, both refused to be interviewed about the matter at press time yesterday.

Lee Ming-yu (李明諭), the lawyer who is defending Kuo and Kao, said that he had no idea why Kao would have taken the pills but he will try to talk to her later.

"It would not surprise me if she is upset about what her co-workers said in court," said Lee.

"But I'll talk to her and try to find out what was going on when she calms down. I'll make sure that things like this never happen again."

On the last day of the three-day pre-trial hearing for the sex-VCD scandal on Friday, Kao's former co-workers at a dental clinic in Taipei City's Shihlin District -- Lai Shu-chen (賴淑珍) and Lin Shih-yun (林詩韻) -- testified against Kao and told the judges that Lee threatened them and asked them to say something good about Kao in court.

According to Lai and Lin, Kao invited them out to dinner on May 4 after they received their summons but had not told them that Lee would be there as well.

The two witnesses told judges that Lee asked them to "say something good about Kao" and told them that he had a "good relationship with the local mafia" during their dinner conversations.

Kao was very upset when she heard Lai's and Lin's testimony.

She called her two former co-workers "bitches" when the court was still in session.

The two witnesses are now under the police's protection and prosecutors have begun to investigate Lee over this matter.

Lee is defending Kuo, formerly Chu's spiritual teacher, and Kao against charges they secretly filmed Chu having sex with her married lover.
