A local filmmaker yesterday told the Taipei District Court that Kuo Yu-ling (郭玉鈴), the spiritual teacher of Chu Mei-feng (璩美鳳), had tried to sell the VCD featuring Chu last fall and implied that China Development Financial Holding Corp (中華開發金控) chairman Liu Tai-ying (劉泰英) might know something about the case since Chu is his nominal foster daughter.
Yesterday was the final day of a three-day pre-trial hearing on Chu's sex-VCD scandal.
Wang Chung-cheng (王重正), a filmmaker friend of both Chu and Kuo, was one of the nine witnesses called by the court yesterday.
He told the judges that Kuo had asked for tips on making money by selling a video of what she termed "Chu's secret life" sometime last fall, but he could not remember the exact date.
Wang testified that Kuo had asked him, "If I have a videotape of Chu's secret life, what do you suggest I do?" and "Is it possible for me to sell it to make some money?"
"I told her not to do so [sell the tape] because it would hurt innocent people," said Wang. "I did not know she really meant it, because she used the word `if' when she asked me."
Wang also testified that Kuo had mentioned Chu's relationship with Liu.
"She told me that Liu is actually Chu's godfather," he said.
Liu is the KMT's former money man and has close ties to former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝).
When asked to confirm Wang's testimony about the relationship between Chu and Liu, Kuo initially remained silent. She finally confirmed what Wang had said, after repeated questioning by the judge.
However, she refused to provide any more details about Chu and Liu.
"This concerns Chu's and Liu's privacy which I don't want to talk about," Kuo told the court.
Neither Chu nor Liu made any comments yesterday in response to the court testimony.
In addition to Wang, the other eight witnesses called yesterday were all friends of two of the defendants -- Kuo and her daughter, Kao Chun-chun (高淳淳).
Also summoned to court yesterday were the other defendants in the case: former Hsinchu City mayor Tsai Jen-chien (蔡仁堅); Scoop (獨家報導) magazine employees Lin Jia-nan (林家男), Shao Wei-hsin (邵偉信), Wang Hsu-yun (王緒筠) and Wang Ya-wei (王亞唯); and Hu Chung-lin (胡鍾琳) who owns Chung-ti Technology Co (中帝科技) -- which has been renamed Hsin-wei Co (鑫瑋).
The hearing has set a new record for the Taipei District Court -- for longest single day of pre-trial hearings. The second day of the hearing began at 9:30am Thursday but did not conclude until 3am yesterday morning
Judge Hsu Shih-chen (徐世楨) said that the next pre-trial hearing will be on June 26 and 27 and the trial will be in July, although the date has been set yet.
