Vice President Annette Lu (§f¨q½¬) called on government leaders from around the world to disregard interference from China and send their high-ranking officials to visit Taiwan.
In a meeting with Frances Jennifer Adamson, Australia's new representative to Taiwan, Lu described Beijing as a cruel lion. "The more you are afraid of it, the more cruel it becomes," she said.
She urged the international community to say no to Beijing's request that Taiwan be snubbed diplomatically, adding that their joint boycott of Beijing's wishes will "tame even the cruelest beast."
Lu said she made two tours of Europe earlier in the year and took heart from the fact that four countries -- France, Austria, Italy and Hungary -- issued her a visa, despite the fact that none of them recognize Taiwan diplomatically.
The vice president said she asked countries to adopt closer ties with Taiwan during her appearance at the annual conference of Liberal International in Budapest, Hungary in March -- and she said her message struck a chord with the audience.
Many at the conference told her that they would do what they could within their own governments to address the situation, Lu said.
Lu said that the pro-Taiwan faction in the Australian Congress has more members than similar groups in any other country's legislature.
