The population of Taiwan and the offshore islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu was 22.43 million as of the end of last month, according to statistics released yesterday by the Ministry of the Interior.
The statistics show an average 620 people per square kilometer and an increase of 121,475 people (0.545 percent) from the year-earlier level.
Kaohsiung City registered the highest population density with 9,757 people per square kilometer among the major cities in Taiwan, followed by Taipei City at 9,687 people and Taichung City with 6,032 people.
Taitung County recorded the lowest population density, with 70 people per square kilometer, according to the statistics.
The male population totaled 11.44 million, while the female population amounted to 10.98 million with an average male to female ratio of 104:100.
There were 20,185 births, representing an annual birth rate of 1.06 percent. There were 11,413 deaths, representing an annual mortality of 0.599 percent.
