Zut Alors! GIO to offer new online daily in French

The Government Information Office (GIO) will launch a new online daily to provide French readers with the most updated information about Taiwan.

In addition, the French version of the GIO's bimonthly Taipei Today -- or Taipei Aujourd'hui -- will be integrated into another French publication, Les Echos, to become a monthly magazine. Les Echos was published every 10 days.

Published five days a week, the online daily, Taiwan Info (台灣快訊), is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on April 1. The publication's Web site address is: taiwaninfo.nat.gov.tw.

Rachel Wu (吳小玲), editor in chief of Taiwan Info, said that she hopes that the new edition will provide French readers with the most up-to-date information about Taiwan on the Internet.

"Due to the advance of electronic technology and the prevalence of personal computers, we thought it was a good idea to provide the most recent information about Taiwan online," Wu said.

Taiwan Info boasts links to 11 government Web sites and five Taiwan-based English-language wire agencies and newspapers, including the Taipei Times.

The Taipei Aujourd'hui bimonthly had been published under the name Free China Review for 17 years before changing its name to Taipei Aujourd'hui in March 2000. The publication featured analysis, in-depth reports and feature stories about Taiwan, its people and culture.

Les Echos was published for 35 years before its last issue on Feb. 21. It focused more on political and economic news.

In addition to the French edition, the Taipei Today bimonthly is published in four other foreign languages: Spanish -- Taipei Hoy, German -- Taipeh Heute, Russian -- Tajbejskaya Panorama, and English -- Taipei Today.
