"People doing online transactions should turn off their cookies," Trend Micro's Wu warned.

A cookie only can get into a visitor's computer subject to the user not having set the browser to reject cookies.

However, some Web sites will bar users from entry if they have turned off their cookies.

Wu also said that "updating the fixing programs for your operating system (OS) helps prevent a worm's occupation of your PC."

Since no OS is perfectly free of security holes, OS vendors' fixing programs can always reduce the risk of an intrusion by a virus making use of security holes of an OS.

Beyond switching off your cookies and updating your OS, PC power users can find useful security freeware on major download Web sites.
