Malaysia welcomes investors

Taiwan leads the world in many areas of industry, especially its contract manufacturing capabilities and international market access. Taiwanese technology and know-how could be profitably applied to Malaysian resources for mutual benefit.

"We continue to welcome the technological transfers on technical cooperation and joint ventures from Taiwanese investors. There are many opportunities available in Malaysia and these include industries such as high technology, resource based, ancillary and supporting, agro-based, manufacture of precision products, and manufacture of industrial machinery and parts, machine tools, and related engineering products," said Abdul Rahim Bakri, President of Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre.

Malaysia has been welcoming Taiwanese investors and I think Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's call to "Go South" is very timely. Businessmen need to diversify risks and do not put all eggs into one basket and also, there is the huge ASEAN market of 530 million people.

In light of President Chen's call, the Malaysia Trade and Friendship Center and Trade Division are going to intensify its promotional services, siad Abdul Rahim Bakri.

"We also wish to improve our two-way trade and investment missions between Malaysian and Taiwanese to discuss technical cooperation and joint ventures," he added.

The Centre is organizing a seminar on industrial cooperation and business opportunities in Malaysia in three cities, namely Taipei (Sept 3), Hsinchu (Sept 5) and Taichung (Sept 6). For information call the Investment Section at (02) 2713-2626 ext 330.

In addition, the Centre is also expecting a delegation from the Federal Territory of Labuan) offshore Sabah State in East Malaysia) led by the chairman of the Labuan Corp to Taipei from Sept 1-4 this year. A cultural troupe is expected to accompany the delegation. It plans to host a "Labuan Tourism and Business Roadshow" in Taipei for the purpose of promoting Labuan as a niche destination for incentive tours, "Malaysia as a Second Home: program, Borneo adventure and fishing, and off-shore finance.

A major program will include a travel and business seminar in Taipei and also hosting several public cultural performances at a shopping mall here.

The Trade Division will assist the Agricultural Department of Malaysia to organize an agricultural mission to Taiwan from Sept 10-13 this year.

It also has plans to participate in the Taipei International Electronics Show from Oct 16-20 this year at the Taipei World Trade Center besides the usual trade activities of conducting trade seminars and business meetings with Taiwanese businessmen in major cities of Taiwan including Kaohsiung, Taichung, Tainan and Hualien.

In order to further promote and assist Taiwanese companies and entrepreneurs to set up manufacturing operations in Malaysia, MIDA (Malaysian Industrial Development Authority which is directly answerable to the Minister of International Trade and Industry) has since 1989, set up an office in Taipei.

It was set up as the Investment Division of the MFTC. The Investment Division helps Taiwanese investors in all aspects of their investments in Malaysia such as providing information on government policies, availability of industrial land, infrastructure facilities, supply of labor, organizing program for visits to Malaysia and finding suitable Malaysian joint venture partners to the Taiwanese investors.

In terms of locating suitable Malaysian joint venture partners, MIDA has a registry of Malaysian companies (big and small) that are keen to discuss joint venture possibilities with foreign investors.

The Investment Division undertake regular activities to inform Taiwanese investors of the vast investment opportunities in Malaysia.

The major activities include the annual trade and investment mission from Malaysia.

Besides the trade and investment mission, the Investment Division also organizes seminars for visits from the various Malaysian state government officials to promote the investment opportunities in their respective states. It also participates in seminars and exhibitions organized by the relevant Taiwanese industry associations, banks, as well as the chambers of commerce and industry.
