Vancouver defeat Canadiens 5-1

Jared McCann on Tuesday night scored twice and Ryan Miller made 25 saves as the Vancouver Canucks beat Montreal 5-1 to hand the Canadiens their first loss of the season.

Montreal (9-1-0) had set an NHL record with nine straight regulation wins to start the year, and were one victory from tying the best start in league history set by the 1993-1994 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 2006-2007 Buffalo Sabres.

Luca Sbisa, Radim Vrbata and Derek Dorsett had the other goals for the Canucks (4-2-3), while Brandon Prust added two assists as Vancouver snapped a four-game losing streak and won for the first time on home ice in six tries this season.

Torrey Mitchell replied for the Canadiens, while Carey Price stopped 23 shots.

STARS 4, DUCKS 3

In Dallas, Antoine Roussel scored with 1 minute, 28 seconds to play, completing Dallas’ comeback from a three-goal deficit.

Patrick Sharp, Cody Eakin and John Klingberg scored in the second period for Dallas, who trailed 3-0 after one.

Antti Niemi had 17 saves to help the Stars improve to 7-2.

Anaheim, who have lost eight of their first nine games (1-6-2), entered with just six goals this season.

Mike Santorelli, Shawn Horcoff and Carl Hagelin scored for the Ducks in the final 5 minutes, 16 seconds of the first period. Frederick Andersen finished with 30 saves, including 15 in the third period.

BLUES 2, LIGHTNING 0

In St Louis, Missouri, Jake Allen stopped 26 shots for his sixth career shutout, leading St Louis to the win.

Scott Gomez and Troy Brouwer scored as the Blues beat the Tampa Bay Lightning for the fourth straight time, and sixth in their last seven meetings.

Ben Bishop, who was teammates with Allen in Peoria of the American Hockey League for two seasons, had 22 saves for the Lightning.

Gomez gave the Blues the lead when he tipped in a long shot by rookie defenseman Colton Parayko at 15 minutes, 59 seconds of the first.

It was Gomez’s first goal with the Blues and No. 181 for his career.

Brouwer added an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining.
