Pure Youth Construction began the Super Basketball League (SBL) preseason on a high note with an 81-70 triumph over Bank of Taiwan at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Gymnasium in Greater Taichung last night.

The two-time defending champs showed no signs of slowing down despite losing three-point threat and crowd favorite Doug Creighton to China’s Chinese Basketball Association in the off-season, with James Mao picking up the scoring slack with eight points to lead the Bankers 20-18 after the first quarter.

The Builders added to the cushion with another solid second quarter, thanks to the outstanding play of power forward Chien Chia-hung, whose nine points accounted for nearly half of his team’s point total in the quarter to help give his team a 39-32 lead at the half.

Even though the Bankers managed to play the Builders tough in a strong third quarter that saw imported gun Zach Atkinson flexing his muscles inside and outside shooter Shih Chin-yao to combine for 10 of the Bankers’ 21 points, the quarter belonged to Pure Youth’s Keh Chi-hao, who took over the game with 11 points to keep the margin at a comfortable nine.

That was the extent that the Bankers were in the game as the Builders kept their composure and the lead in the fourth by punching the ball inside the paint, with Quincy Davis netting six in the quarter to keep the victory intact.

Four players scored in double-digits for both clubs, with Keh’s game-high 18 leading the Builders and Atkinson’s team-best 14 topping the Bankers.

The Dacin Tigers rallied from two down with a strong fourth quarter to edge past Taiwan Beer 63-61 in the second game in Greater Taichung last night.
