Orica GreenEdge’s Pieter Weening of the Netherlands completed victory in the Tour de Pologne on Saturday, while Britain’s Bradley Wiggins, last year’s winner of the Tour de France, finished the race with a stage victory in the 37km time trial from Wieliczka to Krakow, Poland.

Wiggins completed the stage in 46 minutes, 36 seconds, a full 56 seconds ahead of his closest challenger, Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland.

Weening finished with a time of 31 hours, 58 minutes, 7 seconds, to head Spanish rider Jon Izaguirre by 13 seconds in the overall standings.

Sky Pro Cycling sports director Dan Hunt hailed Wiggins’ victory, which came just a month ahead of the world championships in Florence, Italy.

“It was a fantastic performance,” Hunt said. “He made a massive statement today and he has done really well. It was a real lesson in how to time trial. We went out this morning and researched the course, and it was obvious that it suited Brad. The climbs suited him, the descents suited him and then it was a flying, rolling run-in into Krakow. He absolutely smashed it.”
