Romania’s Simona Halep claimed her first WTA title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Andrea Petkovic in the Nuremberg claycourt final on Saturday.

The world No. 58 saw off the German in one hour, 24 minutes.

Halep, a semi-finalist in Rome last month, only dropped one set en route to her maiden title.

Petkovic, a former top 10 player whose ranking has sunk to 109, was competing in her first final since 2011 after a series of injuries.

Donna Vekic upset the seedings a third time to reach the Aegon Classic final on Saturday.

The 16-year-old Croatian won a staccato, tortuous, frequently rain-interrupted match against former champion, Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 6-3.

Vekic’s opponent will be Daniela Hantuchova, the former world No. 5 from Slovakia, who came from a set down for the third successive match to beat Alison Riske of the US 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

In the quarter-finals of the doubles, Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan and Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain enjoyed a walkover victory against Hantuchova and Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan.
