The Colorado Rockies extended their perfect home-field start to the new MLB season to seven games by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Friday.
Colorado’s Jhoulys Chacin pitched into the seventh inning and became the first Rockies starter to throw 100 pitches in a game since June. He paid the price, leaving the game with a back strain.
In other games, Wandy Rodriguez gave up only one hit in seven innings to steer Pittsburgh past Atlanta. Evan Longoria’s two-run homer lifted Tampa Bay over Oakland, Yu Darvish struck out ten batters to guide Texas past Seattle, New York’s Matt Harvey outpitched Stephen Strasburg in a clash of young aces as the Mets beat Washington, Andy Pettitte lasted into the eighth inning to pitch the New York Yankees past Toronto, and Philadelphia beat St Louis in a rain-shortened game.
Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer and Chacin (3-0) helped himself by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Rockies won their seventh in a row.
Pittsburgh’s Rodriguez (2-0) allowed only a single in the fourth over his seven innings, leading the Pirates to a 6-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Tampa Bay’s Ben Zobrist had a pair of RBI singles to complement Longoria’s two-run shot, powering the Rays to an 8-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Texas’ Darvish (3-1) held Seattle scoreless as he led the Rangers to a 7-0 win over the Mariners.
Texas had a six-run fifth inning, scoring twice as many runs as they had in any inning this year.
New York’s Harvey (4-0) gave up only one run in seven innings to help the Mets down the Washington Nationals 7-1.
Strasburg (1-3) gave up two homers in the sixth inning — the first time in his career he had been tagged twice in one inning. He allowed four runs in six innings.
Veteran Pettitte (3-0) struck out four in a row at one point as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-4. Travis Hafner homered and had two RBIs for the Yankees.
The game between the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park was postponed due to the manhunt which concluded with the capture of the remaining suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.
