Chinese Culture University handed National Taiwan Normal University their first defeat in second-round play at the annual University Basketball Association (UBA) tournament yesterday afternoon, beating the three-time champions 76-52 at the Fu Jen Catholic University in New Taipei City.

Point man Lee Wei-tseh was the star of the show for skipper Lee Ching-chi with 16 points, eight boards, four steals and two assists.

Despite the absence of regular starter Hu Kai-hsiang, the underdogs still proved too good for the No. 1 team in the country.

“I would give [Lee Wei-tseh] an A for the game,” a delighted Lee Ching-chi said after the encounter.

His team pulled off mission impossible by outplaying National Taiwan Normal in every facet of the game.

Chinese Culture held the Future Educators to a season-low eight points in the opening quarter. They then added insult to injury by only allowing the firm favorites an embarrassingly paltry six points in the second to take a surprise 40-14 lead at half-time.

That was all the basketball gods from Taipei’s Yangmingshan (where Chinese Culture is located) needed to put away their cross-town rivals as they led by as many as 33 points in the third quarter, before settling for a 24-point win.

In other results yesterday, Mingdao University beat Hsing Wu University 80-70; National Taiwan Sport University downed National Taiwan University of the Arts 62-60; I-Shou University defeated Shih Hsing University 83-70 and Shoufu University were 76-72 victors against National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
