Unseeded world No. 75 Marina Erakovic of New Zealand beat third seed and world No. 25 Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the Pattaya Open yesterday.

The Taiwanese No. 1, who was born in Hsinchu and spent her early childhood there before moving to Kaohsiung and then to Taipei, where she now lives, lost to defending champion Daniela Hantuchova in last year’s semi-finals and she was upstaged again yesterday by Erakovic.

Hsieh won the WTA tournaments in Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou, China, last year, while she made the doubles final in Pattaya in 2008 with partner Vania King of the US.

Taiwan’s Chang Kai-chen, ranked 112th in the world, was also knocked out of the tournament yesterday when she was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by world No. 90 Mathilde Johansson of France.

In other matches, wild-card Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand beat Annika Beck of Germany 6-3, 6-3 and Alexandra Panova of Russia defeated Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6, 3-2 when the Romanian retired injured in the second set.
