This year’s Hualien Probation Cup Basketball Tournament jumped to a fast start with the Yulon Luxgens downing the Taiwan Mobile Leopards 79-75 at the Hualien County Sports Complex yesterday morning.

The five-day international competition that features an all-star junior college lineup from the US called the Elite Talent Exchange and the Malaysian national team, along with all seven of Taiwan’s Super Basketball League (SBL) squads for the first time, drew an enthusiastic crowd to cheer on their favorite players in Hualien.

“This is the 10th year that we’ve held the event and the fact that all seven of the SBL teams are participating tells us that we must be doing something right,” tournament commissioner Lin Yo-chih said earlier this week.

His early-autumn basketball classic has quietly turned into an unofficial pre-season for the SBL teams to assess their progress in preparation before the regular season begins in early December.

The Luxgens bagged the first win of the season under rookie skipper and former player Chiou Chi-yi, whose coaching debut was a hit as they tamed an aggressive Leopards team that also showcased rookie coach Chia Fan, who left Ming Dao University during the off-season to replace local basketball legend Cheng Chih-long for the lead role with Taiwan Mobile.

‧ Bank of Taiwan 70, Dacin Tigers 62
