A team of cyclists from Kinmen headed for Xiamen City on the southeast coast of China yesterday to take part in the first Kinmen-Xiamen Cross-Taiwan Strait Cycling Open.

Led by Kinmen Cycling Association chairman Huang Ke-biao (黃克標), the 23-member delegation departed by ferry using the “small three links” route to the Chinese port city for a three-day visit.

Huang said the cycling open, with the theme “Green City, Healthy Exercise,” will be held today and will be divided into two races: a 5km race for serious cyclists and a 3km race that is open to the general public.

Huang said Kinmen has many wide open roads and has achieved much in terms of greening and reforestation efforts, making the outlying island an ideal place for cycling.

As well as taking part in the races, the delegation also hopes to learn from Xiamen’s hosting of the event to use as a reference in efforts to further improve Kinmen’s cycling environment, he said.
