Taiwan’s Lu knocked out of Citi Open

MILESTONE LOOMING:Venus Williams defeated Magda Linette at the Bank of the West Classic to move into the quarter-finals, three wins away from her 50th career title

Former two-time champion Williams defeated Linette 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the hard-court tournament at Stanford University.

The 36-year-old Williams is to next face either world No. 203 Catherine Bellis or Sachia Vickery, who is one spot back of Bellis in the world rankings.

“It would be very special to get No. 50 here, but I am just going to try to keep advancing,” said Williams, who has 49 career titles after winning in Kaohsiung earlier this year.

Williams blasted 11 aces and had four double faults against Linette, with the match lasting 2 hours, 14 minutes.

In other matches, fifth-seeded Misaki Doi showed no mercy against her Japanese doubles partner, Nao Hibino, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in their second-round match.

Doi, who is ranked 36th in the world, is to next face either second seed Dominika Cibulkova or Urszula Radwanska of Poland.

Doi is hoping that a good run through the rest of the summer will help her earn a seeding spot for the upcoming US Open.

Doi defeated Karolina Pliskova in Wimbledon’s second round, forced Sam Stosur to play three sets in a first-round loss at the French Open, and gave Angelique Kerber a scare at the Australian Open earlier this year, taking the eventual champion to match point in the early rounds.

British No. 1 Johanna Konta beat Julia Boserup 6-3, 6-1 to book a quarter-final against China’s Zheng Saisai, who upset seventh-seeded Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-1.
