Inter and ACF Fiorentina remained level at the top of Serie A after wins at Torino and UC Sampdoria respectively on Sunday, while AS Roma kept up the pressure with a 2-0 victory over SS Lazio in the capital derby.
Fiorentina won 2-0 to remain ahead on goal-difference after Inter recorded a third successive 1-0 victory. Roma are a point behind, with SSC Napoli a point further back after Gonzalo Higuain scored his ninth league goal of the season to help them beat Udinese 1-0.
Geoffrey Kondogbia scored for Inter, while key saves by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic were also decisive in preserving his side’s lead.

“These are three fundamental points because we get to the international break at the top,” Handanovic said. “At the end we were clinical and we got what we deserved... We have to be humble, things might not go well all the time. Only a third of the season has gone, it would be pointless to think of the title now.”
There was a controversial penalty for Roma’s opener, while both teams hit the woodwork in an entertaining match, but unusually few spectators watched the match amid a boycott to protest new security measures.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Juventus came back from a goal down to win 3-1 at Empoli and move above Lazio on goal-difference, with the capital side having lost four of their past five matches.

“It’s the third successive defeat, it’s clear that the derby was a very important game,” Lazio coach Stefano Pioli said. “The match was decided by two incidents — above all the penalty and then our naivety for the second goal. The foul was outside the area, incidents like this in these games are decisive. It wasn’t a penalty.”
High-flying US Sassuolo beat relegation-threatened Carpi 1-0, while Genoa rescued a 2-2 draw at fellow strugglers Frosinone, despite playing more than 50 minutes with 10 men after Sebastian de Maio was sent off for two bookings. US Citta di Palermo beat AC Chievo Verona 1-0.
Inter were top of the table and had not lost at Torino in 21 years, but they were almost behind 30 minutes in when Marco Benassi’s strike from distance crashed off the crossbar.
The visitors took the lead moments later when Rodrigo Palacio nodded on Yuto Nagatomo’s free-kick for Kondogbia to volley in at the back post.
Inter, who last won by more than one goal in April, had just two shots on target all match.
In the evening match, Fiorentina knew they had to win to move back level with Inter and they took the lead when Josip Ilicic converted a penalty in the 10th minute after Ervin Zukanovic’s handball.
Ilicic combined brilliantly with Nikola Kalinic just before the hour mark for the Croatia international to double Fiorentina’s lead.
In a rare show of unity in the Italian capital, hardcore fans of Roma and Lazio boycotted the match in protest at security measures that have split the Stadio Olimpico “curve” — the ends of the stadium where the ultras sit.
Roma got off to the perfect — albeit controversial — start when Santiago Gentiletti tripped Edin Dzeko for a penalty, but television replays showed the contact was just outside the area. The Bosnia and Herzegovina captain fired the spot-kick down the middle to give Roma a 10th-minute lead.
Felipe Anderson almost scored a spectacular equalizer in the 26th minute, but he hit the bar.
Radja Nainggolan also hit the post shortly before halftime for Roma.
Rudi Garcia’s side did double their advantage just after the hour mark when Gervinho latched onto Nainggolan’s ball over the top and raced forward, before slotting just inside the near post.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
