Staff writer, with CNA

Chen Shih-chieh of Taiwan won gold in the men’s over-105kg weight class at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Phuket, Thailand, on Friday.

The 25-year-old Chen lifted 193kg in the snatch and 245kg in the clean and jerk to win gold in the weight category.

He had a combined lift of 438kg, which was 24kg more than runner-up Bahador Molaei of Iran.

Chen also won a gold medal for his lift in the clean and jerk and took silver for his snatch lift, in which he finished tied with Ivan Efremov of Uzbekistan.

He finished second because of his heavier body weight.

Taiwan’s only other medalist in the championships was Yao Chi-ling, who took silver in the snatch, clean and jerk, and combined lift in the women’s under-75kg weight class.

Wang Zhouyu of China won the event.

The championships began on Sept. 3 and concluded yesterday.
