Qatar champions Lekhwiya have been left with a huge mountain to climb after crashing to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Saudi giants al-Hilal in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
At an empty King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Lekhwiya, who have won the Qatar Stars League four times in the past five years, appeared rusty despite their lengthy pre-season camp in Europe and fell behind to a 11th-minute goal from Brazilian striker Ailton, who took full advantage of a grave blunder by goalkeeper Amine Lecomte.
Lecomte unnecessarily delayed clearing the ball on the edge of his own penalty area, with the ball striking Ailton and bouncing into the net.

Lekhwiya pulled level within six minutes through Youssef Msakni, who profited from a great pass by Nam Tae-hee, before Khalid al-Kaabi made it 2-1 in the 33rd minute.
Carlos Eduardo then made it 3-1 three minutes later before registering his second goal of the match in the 85th minute to complete the rout.
Earlier on Tuesday, Paulinho scored a stunning free-kick from 40m as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou Evergrande thumped Kashiwa Reysol 3-1 to put one foot in the semi-finals.
An early own goal by Kashiwa captain Daisuke Suzuki put the visitors ahead before the thunderbolt from the Brazilian midfielder signed from Tottenham Hotspur in June.
Gao Lin extended Guangzhou’s advantage with a towering header early in the second half before Masato Kudo cut the deficit with a close-range effort late in the game.
Barring a miraculous turnaround in the second leg in China on Sept. 15, Guangzhou are to go into a last-four clash against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors or Gamba Osaka.
Guangzhou won 4-1 at Hitachi Kashiwa Stadium in the semi-finals two years ago, before lifting their first continental title, and they got an early boost when Suzuki deflected Huang Bowen’s free-kick past goalkeeper Takanori Sugeno after only five minutes.
Scolari’s side dominated proceedings in the opening half and they duly increased their lead five minutes before half-time when Paulinho scorched his free-kick into the top corner past a static Sugeno.
Guangzhou appeared to put the tie to bed in the 58th minute when Huang swung in a cross from the left and his Chinese international team-mate Gao rose above the Kashiwa defense to head the ball home.
Kashiwa struggled to create chances, but Kudo gave them some hope when he bundled the ball into the net in the 89th minute after Suzuki dived low to flick a corner across the goalmouth.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
