Ten-man Belgium held on to beat Israel 1-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday after Marouane Fellaini scored an early goal and Belgium captain Vincent Kompany was sent off midway through the second half.
Fellaini scored from close range in the ninth minute to earn a victory that put Belgium top of Group B, ahead of Wales on goal-difference.
However, the victory did not come easy. Kompany was sent off for a second yellow card in the 64th minute and his teammates had to fend off repeated Israel attacks in the final minutes, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois making some important saves.

“We definitely did not deserve to lose today,” Israel coach Eli Guttman said. “This is the type of Israel team that I wanted to see. We saw an Israel team that battled and played modern football. It’s a pity we did not get something from the game.”
Guttman said he was pleased with the team’s performance.
“I saw we did not give up on the game for one moment. I saw that after Kompany was sent off we took control of the game, but they have a great goalkeeper in Courtois,” Guttman said.
Israel made a bright start, with Kompany having to stop a Ben Sahar shot in the first minute.
However, Belgium soon took control, and in the ninth minute, AS Roma striker Radja Nainngolan tried a long-range shot that fell for Kompany. The captain’s effort was blocked, only for the loose ball to be steered home by Fellaini.
The visitors remained in control throughout the first half and into the second, until Kompany received his second yellow for a foul on Eran Zahavi.
From then on Israel piled on the pressure, with Courtois saving a Sahar shot in the 74th minute and captain Tal Ben Haim going close in the 81st. However, Belgium held on to secure victory.
“It’s too bad because we deserved at least a draw from this game, but it gives us confidence for the upcoming games. We have now lost two games, but we played against two excellent teams. Today, we showed we are a team and fought hard. We lost, but we are proud of our performance,” Sahar said.
Israel began the international break at the top of the group, but are now third, two points back, following losses to Wales and Belgium.
Belgium are now in a strong position to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals in France. The top two from each group qualify automatically along with the best third-placed team.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
