A late strike by Leandro Paredes ended AS Roma’s run of four successive league draws with a 2-1 win at Cagliari to reduce the gap on leaders Juventus to seven points and keep their Italian Serie A title hopes alive on Sunday.
Roma’s title push stalled due to four consecutive league draws, and with several key players missing, their trip to Sardinia was set to be anything but plain sailing.
However, Garcia repudiated accusations their run of draws was because of a lack of respect for their opposition, despite the Frenchman saying on several occasions that his team would win the title.

“Even if it appears from time to time I say things that appear arrogant, we have not been lacking in humility,” Garcia said.
Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Daniele de Rossi, Kevin Strootman, Juan Iturbe, Gervinho and Seydou Doumbia were all unavailable against a Cagliari team that has enjoyed a minor resurgence under the guidance of Gianfranco Zola.
Captain Francesco Totti shook off flu-like symptoms to spearhead a three-pronged attack with 18-year-old Daniele Verde to his right and Adem Ljajic out on the left.

Garcia, who made his name as a coach with unfashionable French side LOSC Lille Metropole, guiding them to the 2011 domestic double, praised the young players who he said made the difference against Cagliari.
“The difference was the young players, with a goal by Paredes and two assists from Verde,” 50-year-old Garcia said. “I believe in this guy [Verde]. Aside from his technical and tactical qualities, he works a lot for the team and he is very eager. I think he will go far.”
“The youngsters showed that when we need to call on them that they are ready and that is good news,” he added.
Cagliari had the brighter start and Roma goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis had to use his legs to save from Duje Cop at the near post.
However, Verde made the most of his Serie A debut for Roma and was their most dangerous player in the opening half.
He first hit the side-netting from a Seydou Keita assist before sending a lob into the path of Ljajic for the Bosnian to beat Zeljko Brkic in the 18th minute.
Roma survived a second-half onslaught by Cagliari before virtually sealing the points when Paredes fired a superb first-timer from the edge of the area to beat Zeljko at the keeper’s far post.
Cagliari reduced arrears in the fifth minute of injury time when Paul-Jose M’Poku rose to send a looping header over De Sanctis.
However, the Cagliari’s 11th reverse of the campaign means they remain just one place and one point above the drop zone.
Elsewhere, SSC Napoli tightened their grip on third place with a dominant 3-1 home win over Udinese at the Stadio San Paolo where Dries Mertens opened the scoring and prompted an own goal by Frenchman Cyril Thereau in the second half.
In Sunday’s late game Inter upset predictions against in-form US Citta di Palermo to end a three-game winless streak and inject some hope into their European qualifying chances.
Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi added a second-half brace to Fredy Guarin’s 16th minute opener at the San Siro to send Inter up to 11th, albeit 24 points behind Juventus and 13 behind Napoli in third.
Samuel Eto’o came off the bench for UC Sampdoria in Genoa, but failed to make the difference as Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men saw their push for a Champions League place stall after being held 1-1 by US Sassuolo.
Juventus sit top on 53 points, with Roma second on 46. Napoli are a further four points adrift in third and ACF Fiorentina, who edged Atalanta BC 3-2 in a five-goal thriller, moved up to fourth on 35 points, the same as Sampdoria in fifth.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Forget Real Madrid, Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain, the world’s best soccer team — statistically speaking — might be a little-known outfit from the closed central Asian nation of Turkmenistan. Founded last year, Arkadag, named in honor of former Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, have been unstoppable, notching up 36 consecutive domestic victories in a run still ongoing. The side have not lost a single competitive match and swept to a league and cup double in their inaugural season — success unthinkable almost anywhere else. However, in Turkmenistan, it could hardly have gone any other way. The energy-rich country is one of the most closed
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
