Miroslav Klose struck a brace in a 4-2 win over 10-man Cagliari as SS Lazio moved up to third place in Serie A on Monday and stretch their unbeaten run to six games.
Cagliari had enjoyed a promising run, including a 4-1 win away at Inter, since wily veteran Zdenek Zeman took over the Sardinians at the start of the season, but Lazio had won five of the sides’ past six league meetings and after Victor Ibarbo saw red in the 72nd minute the hosts survived a brief, second-half fightback at the Stadio Olimpico to claim their sixth win of the season.
Lazio are six points adrift of leaders and defending champions Juventus, but only three points behind city rivals AS Roma, who lost 2-0 to SSC Napoli on Saturday.

“I’m happy, because I’ve seen the fruit of the work we did leading up to the game,” Lazio coach Stefano Pioli told Sky Sport. “I’m not looking at the league standings. We’ll first do that in January. Our objective is to qualify for Europe, but it’s a case of taking small steps and taking it game by game.”
Lazio’s quickfire start was rewarded with a seventh-minute opener from captain Stefano Mauri, who bundled the ball past Alessio Cragno from close range as it ricocheted in the Cagliari penalty area.
It was far from pretty, but Klose made amends on 25 minutes when Germany’s all-time record goalscorer fired past Cragno from close range after Senad Lulic had headed Antonio Candreva’s cross into the 36-year-old German’s path.
Klose, who retired from international soccer after helping Germany to World Cup glory in July, grabbed his second a minute later when he beat Cragno from the edge of the area with a slightly deflected shot.
“We gifted them the first half. You could see that my players are used to going to bed at nine o’clock,” Zeman told Sky Sport. “We woke up after the interval and we went close with Ibarbo, but his sending-off made life difficult for us.”
Cagliari were given brief hope of a fightback when Dutch leftback Edson Braafheid deflected Andrea Cossu’s effort past Federico Marchetti in the Lazio goal three minutes after the restart.
Ibarbo twice came close to opening his account, but was stopped twice by an alert Marchetti and the Colombian was given his marching orders on 72 minutes when he lashed out following a tussle with Lulic on the left flank.
Zeman replaced midfielder Lorenzo Crisetig seven minutes later with Joao Pedro and the Brazilian reduced the arrears six minutes from the final whistle after beating Marchetti from close range.
Ederson came on for Mauri on 88 minutes and in the second minute of stoppage-time had the easiest of tap-ins past a stranded Cragno when Candreva’s inviting ball into the area duped the defense.
Earlier, Hellas Verona grabbed a share of the points after a 1-1 draw at AC Cesena and remained in 11th spot, 12 points adrift of Juve.
Cesena’s fourth draw of the season left them third from bottom.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
