Daniel Briere scored his 300th career goal off a rebound with less than a second left in the third period to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday.
Jamie McGinn also scored for the Avalanche, who had opened the season with two shutout losses. Backup goaltender Reto Berra made 27 saves in his first start of the season.
Loui Eriksson had a power-play goal for the Bruins, who have lost three straight.
Boston backup goaltender Niklas Svedberg played his first game of the season and made 28 saves.
The game appeared to be heading to overtime when Svedberg made a pair of stops in the closing minute.
Briere, at the edge of the crease, fired the puck over the sprawling goaltender just before time expired after Jan Hejda’s shot from the point. The clock read 0.0, but replays showed the puck crossed the goal line before time expired.
Anaheim’s William Karlsson scored his first two NHL goals to lead the Ducks past the winless Buffalo Sabres 5-1.
Ryan Kessler scored off a third-period penalty shot, and Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey each had a goal during a one-sided game in which the Ducks outshot the Sabres 44-12.
The Ducks were so dominant — and the Sabres so inept — that Anaheim were outshooting the Buffalos 40-10 when Kessler beat goaltender Michal Neuvirth with a low shot inside the left post with 7 minutes, 35 seconds remaining.
Frederik Andersen made 11 saves to win his second of the season, matching a career best with his sixth straight victory. However, Andersen was denied his first shutout when Tyler Ennis scored in the third period.
In Tampa, Florida, Steven Stamkos scored three goals and Victor Hedman had a career-high four points as the Lightning beat the Montreal Canadiens 7-1.
After Stamkos scored on a breakaway off a pass from deep in the defensive zone by Hedman in the second period, the Lightning captain completed a hat-trick from the top of the right circle on Tampa Bay’s sixth power-play goal this season.
Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat and Vladislav Namestnikov had the other Tampa Bay goals. Stamkos tied Martin St Louis for the team record with eight career hat-tricks.
Brendan Gallagher scored for the Canadiens, who went 3-1 on a season-opening road trip.
The Montreal Senators blanked winless Florida 1-0 after Craig Anderson made 30 saves and Clarke MacArthur scored a power-play goal in front of the smallest crowd in Panthers history.
MacArthur raced up the middle of the ice past two Florida defenders and sent a backhander past Roberto Luongo at 15:34 of the second period for Ottawa’s second power-play goal in 14 opportunities this season.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
