Pittsburgh pinch-hitter Ike Davis launched a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning that lifted the Pirates to a vital 5-2 win over St Louis on Tuesday and boosted their fragile playoff hopes.
The win kept the Pirates within 1.5 games of the last wild-card berth and moved them within five games of the National League Central lead.
In the American League, the Los Angeles Angels reclaimed sole ownership of the lead by beating Miami, while Baltimore’s victory over Tampa Bay stretched their AL East lead to seven games over the New York Yankees, who were beaten by Detroit.
Pittsburgh’s reigning league MVP Andrew McCutchen left the game in the fifth inning because of discomfort in his left ribs. Having only recently come back from a rib problem, the center fielder ran into the wall earlier in the game.
Davis sent a pitch from Seth Maness (5-3) deep over the fence in right-center field to lift the Pirates to victory.
The Angels moved a game above closest rival Oakland by beating Miami 8-2.
Mike Trout had an RBI double among his three hits, and Albert Pujols added a two-run single during Los Angeles’ five-run fourth inning.
Angels’ starter Matt Shoemaker (13-4) pitched seven scoreless innings.
Baltimore’s Jonathan Schoop singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Caleb Joseph had two RBIs as the Orioles tightened their already firm grip on the AL East title with a 4-2 win.
Nelson Cruz had two hits and drove in a run for the Orioles.
Despite an uncharacteristically shaky start from lefty Chen Wei-yin — who had pitched to a 2.72 ERA in six second-half starts coming in — the O’s relievers held Tampa Bay scoreless over the final 13 outs, with Nelson Cruz and Schoop each driving in a run in the winning effort.
The Baltimore relievers gave up only one hit, with the Rays stranding nine runners on base and having two thrown out at home plate.
The offense also covered for Chen, who turned in his second-shortest outing of the year, going 4-2/3 innings and walking three — for just the second time this season — while allowing two runs on seven hits over the 91-pitch outing.
“There are quite a few times that I face this type of situation at the beginning of the game, but somehow I can make the adjustment and work my way back,” Chen said through his interpreter. “But today I tried a lot of things, tried to work my way back, but I couldn’t.
Chen exited after issuing a two-out walk to Ryan Hanigan.
The Yankees’ faint chances of catching the Orioles received a further setback with a 5-2 loss at Detroit.
Tigers’ starter Rick Porcello (15-8) pitched eight impressive innings to set a career high for victories in a season. Having thrown a shutout in his previous start, Porcello did not allow a run until the fifth.
Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth for Detroit, who stayed within 1.5 games of AL Central leader Kansas City and half a game of Seattle in the tussle over the final wild-card berth.
Philadelphia edged Washington 3-2, with Freddy Galvis and Darin Ruf hitting homers and Carlos Ruiz bringing in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
Phillies reliever Ken Giles (3-1) struck out the side in a scoreless eighth to help the Phillies to their fifth win in six games and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth for his 33rd save in 35 chances.
The Nationals lost consecutive games for the first time in more than three weeks.
Milwaukee failed to capitalize on St Louis loss, with a 4-1 loss at San Diego maintaining the Brewers’ 1.5 game lead in the NL Central.
Tyson Ross (12-12), the Padres’ lone All-Star, extended his franchise record with his 13th consecutive quality start. He gave up one run with six strikeouts in 6-1/3 innings. He has a 1.96 ERA over his 13-game run.
Abraham Almonte had two RBIs as the Padres snapped the Brewers’ five-game road winning streak.
Oakland failed to keep stride with the Angels, dropping a game off the pace after a 4-2 loss at Houston.
Athletics’ starter Jason Hammel had retired 10 straight batters when he was replaced by Luke Gregerson (3-3) for the eighth. After a throwing error and a hit-by-pitch put two runners on base, Chris Carter launched a fastball beyond left field for his 32nd homer of the season.
Kansas City’s Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift the Royals to a 2-1 win over Minnesota, maintaining their gap atop the AL Central.
The Royals had been shut down all night by Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco, who threw seven scoreless innings. However, after going quietly in the eighth, the AL Central leaders managed to break through against closer Glen Perkins (3-1) in the ninth.
Alcides Escobar led off with a mistimed hit to shallow right for a single, and Gordon followed by swatting the second pitch he saw over the right-field wall.
New York’s Juan Lagares capped a strong day in the field by hitting a two-run homer that gave the Mets a 3-2 win against Atlanta.
The Los Angeles Dodgers scored six runs in the fourth inning — with the help of two overturned calls — to beat Arizona 9-5.
Cleveland’s Zach Walters hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning to power the Indians to an 8-6 win against the Chicago White Sox.
There were similar extra-innings dramatics at Toronto, where Mike Napoli and Allen Craig both homered in a seven-run 11th inning that lifted the Red Sox to an 11-7 win over the Blue Jays.
Seattle’s James Paxton held Texas scoreless into the seventh inning, guiding the Mariners to a 5-0 win over the Rangers.
San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner was on course for a perfect game after seven innings, and wound up conceding only one hit in a shutout as the Giants beat Colorado 3-0.
Chicago’s Travis Wood pitched six scoreless innings against his former team, notching his first win in two months as he led the Cubs to a 3-0 win at Cincinnati.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
