The Black Bears scored a late goal against the Clouded Leopards in the Taipei Ice Hockey League on Sunday night and added an empty-netter afterward to win 4-2 at the Ice Land Taipei Arena rink.
The Leopards held a 1-0 advantage after the first period — which was dominated by the opposing goaltenders, who between them were forced into a sequence of fine saves.
Bears goaltender Alexander Sjostedt was made to work the hardest, including to shut down a breakaway, pull off a glove save and keep out another while sprawled on the ice. His defense was breached about two minutes from time in the first period when Jack Lu put a shot past his right shoulder from close range.
The Leopards doubled the lead eight minutes into the second period through Steven Chiu, before Alex Kuo pulled one back for the Bears and then Murray Richardson equalized.
Josh Smith spent four minutes in the penalty box, the first after a collision.
“He was skating up the boards with his head down, so I decided to let him know he should keep his head up next time,” Smith said of the player he tangled with.
The 2-2 stalemate lasted until only 14 seconds remained in the game, when Steven Clark used a hand to control the puck to the ice just inside the blue line and put a shot past Leopards’ goaltender Sean He for the lead.
The Leopards then pulled He in search of a draw, but lost the puck and were punished from halfway by Kenny Shih.
Earlier, the Leopard Cats were 9-2 winners over the Buffalos.
Three goals and two assists from Ryan Lang rounded off what he described as a “good team effort.”
Teammate Cullen Revell echoed the comment.
“We controlled the puck and passed well. It was all you could ask from them,” he said.
The Black Bears lead the Open Division on 8 points, the Leopard Cats are on 7, the Clouded Leopards are on 5 and the Buffalos are on 4.
