Atletico Madrid claimed their 10th La Liga crown on Saturday and first in 18 years after coming from behind to draw 1-1 away against title rivals Barcelona.
Alexis Sanchez’s stunning strike fired Barca into the lead on 33 minutes, but Diego Godin’s header four minutes into the second half was enough to give Atletico the point they needed to become the first side other than Barca and Real Madrid to win the league in 10 years.
A point for both sides means that the Catalan side finish the season ahead of third-placed Real thanks to a better head-to-head record, but still three adrift of los Colchoneros.

“There is an enormous feeling of happiness that you cannot explain,” Atletico boss Diego Simeone said. “I want to thank the players and the people that always believed in us. There is no replacement for hard work. The team has understood that, done the work and today is one of the most important days in the history of Atletico Madrid.”
Goal hero Godin said Simeone had fueled his players’ belief that they could win even when they were trailing at half-time.
“The boss told us at half time that we were going to score a goal. In the end, football has been fair to us,” he told Canal Plus.
The draw was a disappointing end to an even more disappointing season that has seen Barca fail to win a major trophy for the first time in six years, prompting coach Gerardo Martino to resign on Saturday after just one season in charge.
Prior to squandering the chance to draw level with Atletico on 89 points by beating them on Saturday — which would have given the Catalans the title due to their superior head-to-head record — Barca failed to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time in seven years after being knocked out by los Colchoneros in the quarter-finals.
“I would like to thank the club for putting their confidence in me and I am sorry that I was unable to deliver,” Martino told a news conference. “The team fought to the end with lots of dignity. I would like to congratulate Atletico they have done very well all through the season.”
Former Barca player Luis Enrique is the favorite to replace Martino, having resigned as Celta de Vigo’s coach on Friday.
“Congratulations to Atletico. They are deserving champions,” Barca midfielder Andres Iniesta said. “We had our chances until the final game, but they have been better and there is nothing more to say. We are hurt to lose the league in the final game. We depended on ourselves to win and we haven’t done, so there is great disappointment because if we had managed to do it the feeling would be very different.”
The visitors started brightly at the Camp Nou, but were dealt a huge blow after 15 minutes when top scorer Diego Costa pulled up with a recurring hamstring injury that makes him a huge doubt for Atletico’s Champions League final against Real Madrid next Sunday.
Arda Turan was then forced off with a hip injury and Adrian Lopez and Raul Garcia entered the fray.
Barca grew into the game as the half developed and could have gone ahead, but Pedro Rodriguez wastefully headed over Dani Alves’ precise cross from the right.
When the Catalan club did go in front just after the half hour it was in spectacular fashion as Lionel Messi cushioned the ball into Sanchez’s path and, despite the narrow angle, the Chilean managed to thrash the ball past Thibaut Courtois.
Atletico searched for an equalizer before the break, but the half-time whistle brought frustration for both sides as both Messi and Sergio Busquets were booked for dissent.
David Villa came within centimeters of an equalizer a minute after the restart and the former Barca striker had another opening moments later smothered by Jose Manuel Pinto.
However, Simeone’s men only had to wait a minute longer to be level as Godin rose highest in the box to power home Gabi’s corner.
Messi did have the ball in the net with 25 minutes remaining, but he was flagged offside as he latched onto a loose ball inside the area.
However, despite piling bodies forward, Barca failed to carve out another clear opening in the final stages as Atletico saw the game out to stretch their unbeaten run against Barca to six games this season.
In the day’s other Liga action, Real crushed RCD Espanyol 3-1 with a 64th-minute goal from Gareth Bale and a brace from Alvaro Morata, Valencia overcame Celta 2-1, while Malaga blanked Levante UD 1-0.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
