Having shaken off the hangover from their title celebrations on Sunday, Portuguese champions SL Benfica host Juventus in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final today.
The Eagles have been driven this season by the bitter memory of 12 months ago, when they found themselves on the verge of winning a treble of Portuguese league and Cup and Europa League, only to miss out on all three trophies in an agonizing two weeks.
Jorge Jesus’ side beat SC Olhanense 2-0 in front of almost 64,000 fans at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday to open up an unassailable seven-point lead with two games remaining in the Portuguese top flight and secure their 33rd title.

“This was our main objective and we are all delighted,” Jesus said on Sunday as thousands of fans gathered to celebrate and welcome the team in their open-top bus at Marques de Pombal Square in the center of Lisbon.
Now, though, Benfica have a possible quadruple in their sights.
Having lost just once in 35 games, they are through to the Taca de Portugal final, in which they play Rio Ave next month, and they face Porto in the semi-finals of the Taca da Liga this weekend.
European success may be the hardest to achieve for a club who have lost all seven continental final appearances since winning their second European Cup back in 1961-1962, but it would be a fitting way to pay tribute to 1960s greats Mario Coluna and Eusebio, who died earlier this year.
Standing in their way are a Juve side who are motivated by the prospect of reaching a final that will be played in their own stadium in Turin.
Juve are on the brink of retaining their Serie A title — they could be crowned champions this weekend — but success in Europe is also hugely important for a club whose last continental trophy was the UEFA Champions League in 1995-1996.
“Many players in this team have never won a European competition and Juventus haven’t won a trophy in Europe for so many years,” midfielder Claudio Marchisio told UEFA’s Web site. “When you reach this stage of the competition motivation can make the difference. So even if we’re coming to the end of the season and our legs are beginning to feel heavy, the trophy can give you that energy to give that bit extra.”
It remains to be seen whether key duo Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez will feature after both were left on the bench at the weekend in the win over Bologna due to fitness problems.
Benfica are without the injured Eduardo Salvio and Silvio, while Nico Gaitan is a doubt after picking up a knock in the weekend win over Olhanense, while Ljubomir Fejsa is also struggling.
The winners will face Spanish opposition in the final itself, with La Liga rivals Sevilla and Valencia facing off in the other semi-final.
Sevilla, who beat city neighbors Real Betis Balompie in the round-of-16, before eliminating Porto in the quarter-finals, are at home in the first leg and their recent form should make them favorites.
They have won 12 of their past 15 matches in all competitions, form that means they remain in the running to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League and coach Unai Emery can look forward to coming up against his former club.
Emery spent four years in charge of Valencia until 2012, leading them to three third-placed finishes in La Liga.
Since his departure in 2012, Valencia have struggled and they look unlikely to qualify for Europe next season via the domestic league, so the pressure is on coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.
“It will be a great tie. We know each other well, but you can’t say either side is the favorite,” Sevilla’s Argentine defender Federico Fazio said.
Both clubs enjoyed success in the UEFA Cup in the last decade, with Valencia lifting the trophy in 2003-2004, before Sevilla won it in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
