SC Freiburg pulled themselves out of the danger zone by beating Werder Bremen 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday.
Julian Schuster put Freiburg ahead in the 15th, Felix Klaus doubled the lead in the 53rd and six minutes later Admir Mehmedi made it 3-0, before Nils Petersen pulled one back for Bremen in the 70th.
Freiburg’s second consecutive victory lifted the team past Hamburg SV and Nuremberg into 14th place. Bremen stayed 12th.
Freiburg have scored seven goals in their past two matches to bolster their hopes of avoiding relegation. Freiburg ended Werder’s five-match unbeaten run and can now secure one more season in the top tier since their next four matches are against four teams below them on the table — Hamburg, Nuremberg, VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Braunschweig.
Freiburg went ahead after Karim Guede barreled his way into the penalty box with the ball. Bremen’s defense eventually kicked it out, but it fell kindly to Schuster, who slammed it into the roof of the net with a volley.
Mehmedi set up Klaus for the second goal after a good run on the left. He squared the ball back for Klaus to drive into the net. Mehmedi then scored himself, after a deflected shot from Klaus came his way.
Petersen took advantage of a bad pass by Matthias Ginter that was intercepted by Aaron Hunt, who laid the ball for the substitute striker to drive home.
