An Arjen Robben hat-trick helped Bayern Munich open up a 20-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a 5-1 win over 10-man Schalke 04, who suffered a second drubbing in four days.
Having lost 6-1 at home to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid on Wednesday in the Champions League, Schalke were put to the sword again at Munich’s Allianz Arena as Bayern went 4-0 up inside half-an-hour.
Bayern extended their record unbeaten league run to 48 matches, dating back to October 2012, and earned their 15th straight league victory.

“My son will enjoy having the match ball, my kids are my biggest fans,” father of three Robben said. “We play with so much aggression and tempo, we really put our foot down.”
With just three minutes gone, left-back David Alaba netted a free-kick, then Robben scored either side of Mario Mandzukic’s header from a superb Alaba cross to make it 4-0 at the break.
Schalke were gifted a goal when Jefferson Farfan’s corner was turned into his own net by Munich right-back Rafinha, in for captain Philipp Lahm, with 25 minutes left.
To compound Schalke’s misery, Greece center-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos was shown a straight red for bringing down Mandzukic in the area.
His foul allowed Robben to wrap up his hat-trick with a 77th-minute penalty.
“You can’t get much worse than that,” said Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes, who had a miserable 26th birthday. “That was highly embarrassing and we need to apologize to our fans.”

Lightning struck twice for Marc-Andre ter Stegen when the Borussia Moenchengladbach goalkeeper scored a bizarre own goal in a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Braunschweig and his opposite number also put one into his own net.
Braunschweig goalkeeper Daniel Davari inadvertently gave Gladbach a first-half lead and ter Stegen returned the compliment when he failed to control a back pass and instead knocked the ball into the net shortly after the break.
There was not the slightest danger when Filip Daems rolled the ball back to Ter Stegen, but the goalkeeper miskicked the ball and it rolled into the net in a moment of pure slapstick.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
