Kaohsiung Normal remain undefeated after edging NTU

National Kaohsiung Normal University remained unbeaten in the annual University Basketball Association (UBA) tournament by holding off a late-game rally by National Taiwan Sport University to escape with a 72-68 win in the second round of play at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei yesterday afternoon.

Chou Ching’s pair of free-throws in the closing seconds of the match sealed the deal for the Future Educators from Greater Kaohsiung, who came close to snapping their undefeated streak in the UBA competition by squandering a comfortable lead earlier in the game.

FU JEN 75, SHOUFU 68

New Taipei City’s Fu Jen Catholic University also claimed their second win in as many days in the second round of the tournament, topping Greater Tainan’s Taiwan Shoufu University to improve their chances of advancing to next month’s medal round.

Coming into the game as the slight underdogs with a dismal 1-3 record in the preliminaries, Fu Jen showed no signs of their previous poor form as they outclassed Shoufu in every facet of the game to win it fair and square.

Yang Hong-yu carried his red-hot shooting touch over from Sunday — when he netted 22 points — with another team-high 16 points yesterday to lead Fu Jen’s inside attack.

Even though the 189cm-tall Yang does not have the height to be a true center, he more than makes up for it with a natural instinct for the ball. If his good form continues, Yang will be trouble for Fu Jen’s future opponents.

I-SHOU 87, NTU ST 59

Greater Kaohsiung’s I-Shou University made the most of their first appearance in the second round by roughing up Taipei’s National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in a blowout last night.

Speedy point guard Ko Min-hao exposed the Techies’ slowness on defense by taking the ball strong to the hoop on several occasions to net 16 points in the game.

Yesterday’s loss was the Techies’ second straight following their 81-70 crushing at the hands of National Taiwan University of Arts on Sunday evening, a loss that put a big dent in their chances of progressing into the UBA’s medal round.

Also yesterday it was:
