St Louis’ Kevin Shattenkirk scored his first goal of the season midway through the third period to give the Blues a 2-1 win over Metropolitan Division-leading Pittsburgh on Saturday.
St Louis moved within two points of the lead in the Central Division, behind joint leaders Colorado and Chicago, who went to the top with an impressive win at Dallas.
St Louis also got a goal from Ryan Reaves, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 19 shots as the Blues won for the 11th time in 15 games to start the season. It is the first time they have done that since 2003-2004, also the best start in franchise history.
It was St Louis’ first regulation-time victory against the Penguins for seven years.
Jussi Jokinen scored for the Penguins, who had a season-low 20 shots.
Tampa Bay’s Teddy Purcell scored at 3 minutes, 51 seconds of overtime to give the Lightning a 4-3 win over Detroit.
Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos also scored for Tampa Bay, who got their first win in Detroit in 19 years.
