Martin Brodeur stopped 22 shots, and Adam Henrique and Cam Janssen each scored goals to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.
Jaromir Jagr added an empty-netter with 1.3 seconds left.
Brodeur was never seriously challenged against the NHL’s weakest offense and posted his 122nd career shutout.
The Flyers have scored two goals in their last four games and have twice been shutout over that span.
The anemic Devils have not been much better. They were blanked in their last two games, snapping the scoreless drought on Henrique’s goal only 1:57 into the game.
Janssen scored in the third period.
Meanwhile Chris Higgins had a goal and an assist and Roberto Luongo made 22 saves to help Vancouver snap a nine-game losing streak to San Jose in a 4-2 victory.
Brad Richardson, Mike Santorelli and Zack Kassian also scored for the Canucks, who had lost all five regular season meetings between the teams the past two seasons and were swept by San Jose in the first round of the playoffs last spring.
Joe Thornton and Mike Brown scored for the Sharks, who lost their fourth straight game, but just the second in regulation all season.
Antti Niemi allowed four goals on 12 shots before being replaced early in the second period as the Canucks controlled the play for much of the first 40 minutes and weathered a strong push from San Jose in the third.
In Los Angeles, Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar scored power-play goals, and Jonathan Quick earned his first shutout of the season in the Kings’ 2-0 victory over Buffalo.
Richards had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who returned from a four-day schedule break with their ninth victory in 13 games. Quick made 19 saves, including a handful of exceptional stops in his 26th career shutout.
Jhonas Enroth stopped 26 shots for the NHL-worst Sabres (3-14-1), who could not follow up their stunning win at San Jose with another surprise on their three-game California road trip.
Meanwhile, in Boston Tuukka Rask made 23 saves as the Bruins beat the Panthers 4-1.
Rask improved to 9-1 against Florida in helping Boston win for the third time in their past seven home games. The Bruins have won five straight and seven of their last eight against the Panthers.
Florida have lost 10 of their past 11 games and are on their longest skid (0-3-4) since a 10-game slide in April 2011.
David Krejci gave Boston a 1-0 lead when his shot from the blue line beat Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen at 7:17 of the second period.
Brad Marchand had the winner on a wrist shot 4:09 into the third period.
In other NHL games it was:
‧ Blues 3, Flames 2
‧ Stars 4, Red Wings 3, OT
‧ Senators 4, Canadiens 1
‧ Capitals 3, Wild 2
‧ Hurricanes 1, Islanders 0
‧ Rangers 4, Blue Jackets 2
‧ Lightning 4, Oilers 2
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
