Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce ended Jason Grilli’s saves streak with a solo homer in the ninth, and then Brandon Philips singled with the bases loaded in the 13th inning to rally the Reds to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, Texas’ David Murphy lifted the Rangers over Oakland and Chris Davis hit his MLB-leading 25th then 26th homers of the season to power Baltimore past Detroit.
Cincinnati’s winning run came after Derrick Robinson and Choo Shin-soo singled off Vin Mazzaro (3-2) with one out in the 13th and Joey Votto was walked intentionally. Phillips singled up the middle to end it.
Pirates closer Grilli started the ninth needing one save to tie a club record. He had converted all of his 25 chances this season, but Bruce connected on the first pitch he saw for his fourth homer in his last six games. It was the first homer Grilli had allowed this season.
Murphy had three hits and scored twice to lead the Rangers to a 9-4 win over Oakland, closing the gap between the top teams in the American League West division.
Texas starter Justin Grimm (6-5) trailed when he threw his last pitch, but the Rangers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead.
Baltimore’s Chris Davis cleared the fences twice to power the Orioles to a 13-3 rout of Detroit.
Davis hit a two-run homer and Taylor Teagarden followed with a three-run home run in Baltimore’s six-run fourth. Davis hit another two-run shot for his second multihomer game of the season.
The Orioles improved to a season-high 11 games over .500 after beating the AL Central-leading Tigers twice in the three-game series.
Chris Tillman (8-2) became the third pitcher in Orioles franchise history to win his first six decisions on the road, joining Jeff Ballard (1989) and Hoyt Wilhelm (1959).
St Louis’ Yadier Molina hit a homer as the major league-leading Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1, while Los Angeles’ Hanley Ramirez capped a six-hit day with a pair of RBI singles and Yasiel Puig homered to complete a dazzling debut in New York as the Dodgers won 6-0 to take the second game of a double-header. US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in

Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
