MAJOR LEAGUES
The San Francisco Giants finally got the better of Tim Hudson, beating the Atlanta pitcher and the Braves 8-2 on Friday.
Atlanta’s veteran pitcher Hudson (4-2) had been 6-0 with a 2.48 ERA against San Francisco dating back to 2006 and was cruising in this one, until the Giants batted around and scored six runs in the fourth inning.

San Francisco’s Matt Cain (2-2) pitched eight strong innings and also hit an RBI single during the game-changing fourth inning.
Also on Friday, rookie Shelby Miller pitched a shutout as St Louis beat Colorado and the New York Yankees’ bats lit up with a big win over Kansas City. Detroit’s sluggers Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera hit huge homers as the Tigers downed Cleveland.
Baltimore rallied to beat Minnesota in 10 innings and Arizona edged Philadelphia to win its fifth straight, while Boston’s Jon Lester shut out Toronto.
St Louis’ Shelby Miller gave up a leadoff single, then retired 27 in a row for his first career complete game, leading the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over Colorado.
He gave up only one hit — the least by a Cardinals pitcher since Bud Smith tossed a no-hitter in 2001 — and had 13 strikeouts, tying a Cards rookie record.
New York’s Lyle Overbay hit a two-run homer and finished with five RBIs as the Yankees beat Kansas City 11-6.
Overbay finished with a career-high four hits, while Ichiro Suzuki had a two-run shot among his three hits as the Yankees delivered manager Joe Girardi his 500th win in pinstripes.
Detroit scored three runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth to set up a 10-4 win over Cleveland.
Prince Fielder’s long third-inning solo shot gave Detroit a 4-1 lead, while Cabrera’s three-run homer also carried a long distance.
Baltimore’s Manny Machado had a tiebreaking RBI single in a three-run tenth inning that completed the Orioles’ comeback 9-6 win at Minnesota.
Baltimore scored all their runs in the last five innings after trailing 6-0 to start the sixth.
Machado — who stayed in the game after fouling a ball off his ankle in the fifth — rolled a single into right field that scored Chris Dickerson and broke a 6-6 tie. Nick Markakis added a sacrifice fly and Adam Jones an RBI double to cap the scoring in the 10th.
Arizona’s Miguel Montero hit a tiebreaking homer to lead off the eighth inning as the Diamondbacks edged Philadelphia 3-2.
The Diamondbacks struggled, but scratched out a run in the seventh and went ahead when Montero hit the first pitch thrown by Mike Adams (1-3) in the eighth off the foul pole in right field.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy gave up a leadoff homer and two runs in the first inning before settling down and lasting seven innings.
Boston’s Jon Lester pitched a one-hit complete game as the Red Sox broke a three-game skid and beat Toronto 5-0.
Just nine days shy of the fifth anniversary of his no-hitter, Lester retired the first 17 batters before Maicer Izturis hit a double with a ball that landed just inside the foul line.
Lester (5-0) allowed just one of the remaining nine batters to hit the ball out of the infield and finished with five strikeouts.
Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips homered and made a spectacular rally-busting play — using his left knee to get a forceout and start a double play — as the Reds beat Milwaukee 4-3.
Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma retired 16 straight batters over one stretch of a solid seven-inning outing, while Raul Ibanez homered for the first time in nearly a month as the Mariners beat Oakland 6-3.
Washington’s Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer and an RBI double, while Danny Espinosa and Kurt Suzuki also drove in runs with doubles, as the Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 to notch a season-high fifth consecutive victory.
Pittsburgh’s Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer — a call that was correctly overturned on replay — to help the Pirates beat the New York Mets 7-3.
Tampa Bay’s Alex Cobb struck out 13 in less than five innings, while Ryan Roberts and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs apiece to help the Rays rally for a 6-3 victory over San Diego.
Los Angeles’ Mike Trout had two hits, including the go-ahead single in the seventh inning, to lead the Angels to a 7-5 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Miami’s Derek Dietrich tied the game with his first major league home run and Juan Pierre singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Marlins won 5-4 to deal the Los Angeles Dodgers their eighth straight loss.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan on Saturday won the men’s doubles bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, after they were bested by the hosts in their semi-final. The Taiwanese shuttlers lost to China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who advanced to yesterday’s final against Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzudin. The Chinese pair outplayed Lee and Yang in straight games. Although the Taiwanese got off to a slow start in the first game, they eventually tied it 14-14, before Liang and Wang went on to blow past them to win 21-17. In the second game, Lee and
