MAJOR LEAGUES
Texas’ Craig Gentry had an infield hit that produced two runs and later hit a two-run homer as the Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Saturday.
The Rangers broke a 1-1 tie and went ahead to stay on the speedy Gentry’s infield hit in the fourth. He added his first homer in the eighth.
Elsewhere, Phil Hughes pitched the New York Yankees past Oakland, Stephen Strasburg was also in command to guide Washington past Pittsburgh and Jon Jay drove in the winner as St Louis edged Milwaukee.
San Francisco’s Guillermo Quiroz homered in the 10th to give the Giants a second-straight walkoff win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, Steve Pearce also drove in a 10th-inning winner for Baltimore against the Los Angeles Angels and Colorado’s bats hummed in a comfortable win over Tampa Bay.
Texas’ Alexi Ogando (3-2) pitched into the seventh inning for his first victory in five starts and the AL West-leading Rangers (19-11) clinched the series against the Red Sox (20-10), who still have the best record in the majors even after losing the first two games.
New York’s Phil Hughes pitched eight shutout innings for his first win of the season as the Yankees beat Oakland 4-2.
Hughes (1-2) struck out nine and outpitched his former New York teammate Bartolo Colon, who gave up two homers and suffered his first loss of the season.
Washington’s Stephen Strasburg struck out eight in seven innings and the Nationals edged Pittsburgh 5-4 — winning a game their ace started for the first time since opening day.
Strasburg, though, remained winless since his first start, allowing five hits.
Tyler Moore hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.
St Louis’ Jon Jay homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth to give the Cardinals a 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
In the ninth, Shane Robinson singled to center and took second on a fielding error. Robinson stole third and scored when Jay singled up the middle.
Jay hit a three-run home run in the second, Allen Craig connected for a solo shot in the sixth and Daniel Descalso put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run homer in the seventh.
San Francisco pinch hitter Guillermo Quiroz homered with one out in the 10th inning to again give the Giants a walkoff against the Dodgers, winning 10-9.
The Giants blew a 5-0 lead and wasted a bases-loaded opportunity in the ninth, before Quiroz hit an 0-2 pitch from Dodgers closer Brandon League (0-1) into the left-field stands.
The teams combined for 19 runs and 30 hits, and stranded 24 runners in a game that lasted 4 hours, 11 minutes. It was San Francisco’s fourth straight win over their NL West rival.
Denver’s Carlos Gonzalez hit a go-ahead homer in the fifth and rookie Nolan Arenado added a grand slam, lifting Colorado to a 9-3 win over Tampa Bay.
Arenado broke open a tight game when he lined a curveball from David Price (1-3) into the left-field seats in the seventh. It was his first career grand slam.

US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in

Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
