Day two of the “Pink Day” cricket tournament in Chiayi City saw the Taiwan Daredevils claim the trophy with three big wins. They faced Pakistan Cricket Club Taipei (PCCT) in the final, which started in controversial circumstances after a group match was allowed to run on for too long. There was a further problem as Daredevils captain and opening bat Duane Christie (35 not out) was forced to leave the field when his wife was involved in a nasty collision in a ladies’ match.
Jeff Black (107 not out) batted on in typically unflustered fashion though he had be on his guard for the odd ball that kept low. At the other end, Mahroof Hussain (21) produced a few boundaries with his cut shot before being caught behind off Rehan Naeem.
Black then stamped his authority on the game, pacing his innings brilliantly and powering the ball over the fences.
In pursuit of 174 PCCT were undone by regular strikes by Roy Horgan (4-25). Only Amjad Zafar (31) provided serious resistance.
The Darling Devils took on Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU) at the same time in a women’s match. CJCU put on 178, with Qiu Yu-ting (24) and Luo Hao-yu (20) the main contributors. Jennifer Chen (2-19) showed her older teammates up a bit bowling straight and true to clean bowl one victim and grab an LBW decision.
Shani Engelbrecht and Aniena Joubert shared a profitable opening partnership in reply. Ma Yi-ru then came on and repeatedly beat the bat. All the anticipation turned to joy as the Darling openers were bowled in consecutive overs. From there the Darlings collapsed until captain Mary Mullan Christie returned despite her injury. CJCU won by 32 runs.
The two Saturday matches were completed with the Daredevils easily defending their 166 bowling PCCT out for just 43, Horgan taking 3-6.
Hosts the Taiwan Stars picked up their only win defending 128 against Formosa Cricket Club.
The Daredevils then left Formosa winless after sealing a five wicket victory although Ric McGrail made sure it was not a totally one-sided contest by picking up four wickets.
PCCT qualified for the final with a comfortable win over the Stars.
Points: Daredevils 9, PCCT 7, Stars 5, Formosa 3.
