National Kaohsiung Normal University played the role of spoiler on the final day of the second round of the annual University Basketball Association (UBA) tournament yesterday afternoon, topping the heavily favored Fu Jen Catholic University in a 70-67 final on Fu Jen’s own floor to deny the hosts a trip into the upcoming Final Four showdown.
Liu Chih-huan’s buzzer-beating three-pointer left the Fu Jen crowd completely in disbelief just moments after Fu Jen had rallied from 11-down at the start of the fourth to tie the game at 67-all on a basket by Huang Chen with 3.4 seconds on the clock to seemingly send the game into overtime.
That would not be the case, as Liu calmly received an inbound pass and squared himself up to launch the game-winner with a Fu Jen defender in his face.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to be able to hit the game-winner, since I asked to be the one to take the final shot during our last timeout,” Liu said after the game.
Even though the win did not help National Kaohsiung Normal’s advance into the Final Four, it was just as sweet nonetheless for the future educators from the south.
“[National Kaohsiung Normal] really outplayed us today, there is no question about that,” Fu Jen Catholic head coach Liu Jung-yeh said after the game.
His troops had trailed for the most part in a game they should have won by double-digits.
Meanwhile, Changhua’s Ming-dao University also rallied from 11-down early in the fourth quarter to ward off Taipei’s National Taiwan Science and Technology University in a 69-64 decision yesterday afternoon to close out their season with an eighth-place finish.
The loss concluded what had been a rollercoaster ride for the Techies, who started off the second round with two upset wins over worthy opponents, but quickly returned to their old form by dropping the next four in a row to settle for an 11th-place finish.
